Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20th 1964) is an American lawyer and politician who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States. She is the first woman to be elected vice president and also holds the title of highest-ranking female officer in American history. She is a part of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she was an United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career at the Alameda County District Attorney's Office prior to being enlisted into the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and then to the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. In 2003 she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. Harris was elected Attorney general of California in the year 2010. In 2014, she was elected to a second term. Harris was the United States junior senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris beat Loretta Martinez in 2016's Senate election to become the 2nd African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. As a senator she advocated health reform, federal descheduling for cannabis, a pathway for immigrants who are not legal citizens, the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also supported progressive tax reform. She is well-known for her direct questioning of Trump government officials during Senate hearings.
